Google Calendar sends nothing genuinely useful. The Birthday Reminder app charges from the 11th contact. The iOS contacts, you have tried them — and then forgotten them. And yet there is a solution that works.
Every year, the same quest. You look for a simple app so you never again miss the birthdays of the people close to you. You try, you install, you give up. Not for lack of motivation — for lack of a solution that is at once free, genuinely useful, and does not require ten minutes of setup per contact.
This guide honestly compares the main solutions available in 2026 so that you can make an informed choice.
Google Calendar with recurring events. The classic method. You manually create a yearly event per person, you switch on a notification. The result: you get an alert on the morning of the birthday. No message suggestion, no advance reminder, no help preparing anything at all. And if the person changes number, or you want to add a contextual note, you have to do everything by hand.
iOS contacts / Apple birthdays. Apple syncs the birthdays entered in your contacts with the Calendar app. Handy in theory. In practice: how many of your contacts have their date of birth filled in? Probably fewer than 15%. And even with a correct date, the notification arrives on the morning of the day itself — always too late to do better than a “happy bday” fired off in a hurry.
Dedicated third-party apps — the paid ones. Birthday Calendar, Birthdays!, Remember Dates... These apps often offer a prettier interface and advance reminders. The problem: the vast majority cap free contacts at around ten, then ask for a monthly subscription (between €2 and €5/month) for features that ought to be basic. Some also have murky business models based on your data.
Before choosing a birthday app, ask yourself these four questions. Does it warn you early enough? An alert on the day itself is only useful if you have already prepared everything. The bare minimum is 7 days before. Does it help you find what to say? Being reminded only solves half the problem. The other half is finding the right words — especially for the loved ones who deserve better than an emoji. Is it really free and unlimited? Always check the freemium model. Many apps lure you in with a free tier, then charge from the 11th contact. Is the setup quick? If adding a birthday takes more than 30 seconds, you will give up before you have entered half the people close to you.
Filomy was designed to meet exactly these four criteria. You add a contact and their birthday date — that is all. Filomy takes care of the rest: an automatic reminder 7 days before to give you time to get organised, a reminder 1 day before for a last chance, and in between, an AI-generated message suggestion.
This AI message is not an interchangeable template. It is built from the relationship you have described with the person — close friend, colleague, parent, partner — and can weave in an anecdote or a context you want to mention. The result reads like something you would have written yourself, had you had the time to think it over.
The reminders feature is entirely free, with no contact limit, no subscription. If you want to go further — create a real digital card with photo, audio or video, shareable via QR code — Filomy offers that too, separately.

Yes. The automatic reminders 7 days and 1 day before, as well as the AI message generation, are entirely free and with no limit on the number of contacts. No bank card required.
What is the difference between Filomy and a simple Google Calendar alert?
Google Calendar warns you on the morning of the day itself, with no message suggestion. Filomy warns you 7 days before AND 1 day before, and generates a personalised message tailored to your relationship with the person.
Does Filomy work on iPhone and Android?
Filomy is a progressive web app (PWA) accessible from any browser, iOS or Android. No download required from an app store.
